The Department of Children and Youth under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, through the Child Adoption Board, is the competent authority for adoptions in Thailand. Document legalization by the MFA and the receiving country's embassy comes after the Board's process, and no legalization chain can substitute for that approval.

What documents usually need certified translation and legalization?

Typically the adoption order or Board approval, the child's birth certificate, the household registration, consent documents from the birth parents or guardian institution, and the adopters' identity and home-study documents. Each is translated, certified, legalized by the MFA Department of Consular Affairs, and where required legalized again by the receiving embassy.

Do documents issued abroad also need work in Thailand?

Yes. Home-study reports, police clearances and approvals issued overseas normally need apostille or legalization in the issuing country, then a certified Thai translation, and often legalization by the Thai embassy there or by the MFA in Bangkok. We map both directions of the chain so nothing is done in the wrong order.

How long does the document side take?

Translation and MFA legalization of a full adoption bundle usually take one to three weeks depending on volume, and embassy steps add several days to several weeks.
