ILC-NAATI-BC01

NAATI birth certificate translation | Names, parent details and credentials

A birth certificate records the facts entered by its issuing authority. Translation should preserve those facts, not add citizenship, custody or migration conclusions.

Identify the certificate your recipient requests

Provide the actual certificate, every page and any reverse-side notes, together with the receiving authority and its current checklist. A reissued extract and an older original may not contain identical information; confirm the required version before commissioning translation.

If a new extract or certified copy is required, arrange it with the issuing authority. Translating an older document neither renews its issue date nor replaces a missing original.

Match the child and each parent separately

Provide relevant passport spellings for the child and parents, and explain any prior name or surname changes. Do not assume that family members share a surname or omit a parent because their details differ from another document.

Check the date and place of birth, record references and amendments against the source. Flag conflicting names or dates rather than changing the translated facts to hide a discrepancy. Ask the issuer how to correct the source if needed.

Do not confuse birth evidence with custody authority

A recorded parental relationship is not automatically a substitute for a custody order, travel consent or other evidence required for a child’s application. Use the recipient’s checklist to decide which additional records need translation.

Language work does not determine citizenship, parental authority or visa eligibility. The receiving authority assesses the application and its supporting evidence.

Verify the practitioner assigned to your language direction

Where NAATI certification is required, request the actual translator’s Certified Practitioner Number (CPN). Check the relevant certification, language and direction using NAATI’s verification tool; a company name or product label does not establish an individual credential.

NAATI states that passing CCL is not professional translator or interpreter certification. Home Affairs distinguishes translator information for applicants inside and outside Australia, so do not assume a universal requirement for every application.

Agree the certification and delivery scope

Send the recipient’s requirements for signatures, stamps, source attachments and electronic or paper copies. Copy certification and legalisation are separate tasks, not automatic parts of birth certificate translation.

Contact our team for a quotation based on the document, language pair, page count and intended submission date. Agree source changes, corrections, delivery and any additional certification before accepting. No fixed turnaround or recipient approval is promised.

Questions before commissioning

What if a parent’s passport spelling differs?

Identify the difference and provide relevant name-change evidence. Preserve the source facts rather than silently replacing them. Ask the issuing authority about source corrections where necessary.

Does the translation replace child travel consent?

No. A birth certificate and consent or custody evidence serve different purposes. Follow the checklist for the child’s actual application.

Is a CCL result a translator certification?

No. NAATI expressly distinguishes CCL from professional certification. Verify the practitioner who will translate the document.
