ILC-NAATI-DL09
NAATI Thai driving licence translation | Vehicle class and state rules
A driving licence translation is neither a new licence nor an international driving permit. It does not approve a licence conversion; check the authority for the state or territory where it will be used.

Identify the destination authority and actual licence
Send readable images of both sides and specify the state or territory and intended use, such as driving-document checks or licence conversion. A visa submission and a road-authority application are different requests.
Show any English information already present and the recipient’s current checklist. Partial English text does not establish that translation is always required or always unnecessary.
Translate vehicle classes without granting local categories
Check the name, licence number, vehicle class, issue and expiry dates and visible restrictions. Do not turn a source category into a supposedly equivalent or higher local entitlement.
Replace unreadable images. If you hold separate car and motorcycle licences, identify each source instead of silently merging information from different records.
Separate translation from driving and conversion eligibility
Translation does not renew a licence, issue an international driving permit or waive tests and local requirements. The relevant road authority determines permitted use and conversion.
Do not assume one rule or driving period across Australia. Check current official requirements for the state or territory and the driver’s circumstances.
Verify road-authority requirements rather than visa rules
Where the road authority specifies NAATI, verify the assigned translator’s CPN, certification and language direction. Passing CCL is not professional translator certification.
Home Affairs guidance concerns its applications, not universal road-authority acceptance. Obtain the actual licence recipient’s requirements before commissioning.
Agree the translation format before the appointment
Specify required files or paper, signatures and source attachments. Copy certification is a separate task if needed; take original documents as required by the authority.
Contact our team for a quotation based on the actual licence and language pair. Give the appointment date for feasibility review, not as an assumed delivery commitment or conversion guarantee.
Questions before commissioning
Is a NAATI translation an international driving permit?
No. They are different documents. Check the authority’s requirements for the intended use.
Will translation waive a driving test?
No waiver is promised. The road authority applies its rules to your circumstances.
Does an English-bearing Thai licence still need translation?
Check its actual information and the state or territory’s current requirements rather than assuming a universal exemption or requirement.
