Japanese documents / use in Thailand
Japanese documents for use in Thailand: start with the Thai recipient
A Japanese family-register extract, corporate record and academic certificate serve different Thai filings. Before ordering a fresh copy or translation, ask the Thai receiving office which document, issue date and form of authentication it accepts.

Match the document to the Thai filing
Family and civil status
For a marriage or family registration, ask the receiving Thai district office whether it wants a Japanese family-register extract (戸籍謄本) or another certificate. Check how recently it must have been issued and which portions require translation.
Company records
For a Japanese corporate record, ask the Thai receiving authority or filing reviewer which registration certificate, authorized-signatory details and issue date are needed. A family-register checklist does not apply to a company filing.
Academic credentials
Ask the Thai university or professional body whether it requires a degree certificate, transcript or a record issued directly by the Japanese institution. Confirm the language and translation format with that specific recipient.
Before documents leave Japan
- 01Obtain the Thai recipient's current written document list for the actual filing and location.
- 02Compare Thai, Japanese and English name spellings and dates with identity documents; disclose any name changes.
- 03Ask the Japanese issuer how to obtain the precise record requested, then check whether the Thai recipient accepts an original or a copy.
- 04Confirm the Japanese authentication and Thai mission sequence with the Thai recipient before paying for it; share the recipient's translation rules with the translator.
A Japanese Apostille is not a universal shortcut into Thailand
As of 1 October 2026, Thailand has acceded to the Apostille Convention but it does not enter into force for Thailand until 28 February 2027. Although Japan is a party, do not assume a Japanese-issued Apostille automatically replaces Thai embassy authentication or a Thai receiving authority's current procedure. Check the actual filing requirements with that authority and the relevant consular office. Authentication of a seal or signature does not certify the document's contents.
Translation and authentication answer different questions
A Japanese-to-Thai translation makes the document readable to its Thai recipient; it does not authenticate the Japanese issuing official's signature. Likewise, authenticating the original does not certify the accuracy of its translation. Ask whether the recipient specifies the translator, signature or further certification.
Details for a case-specific review
Provide the Thai recipient's name, filing type, images of each page with unrelated personal information redacted, and its written instructions. Fees: ask our team after reviewing the actual document list; no single turnaround applies to all cases.
