Thai documents / use in South Korea

Thai documents for South Korea: visas, marriage and study follow different rules

Visa or status applications through the Korean Embassy or immigration offices, marriage registration at a Korean district office and school admissions ask for different documents and translation formats. Check the recipient's list before translating into Korean or English.

Three common cases and what to ask

Visas and residence status

The document list depends on the visa type, such as spouse, work or student. Check the Korean Embassy in Thailand or HiKorea for your category and whether translations must be in Korean or English.

Marriage registration in Korea

Korean district offices commonly ask the Thai spouse for proof of single status and identity, with Korean translations. Ask the office where you will file what authentication it needs before preparing documents.

University or language study

Universities and language institutes set their own lists, such as transcripts, graduation certificates or financial evidence. Some state the required credential authentication in the admission notice; read it directly.

Checks before ordering translation or authentication

  1. 01Identify the recipient, visa or application type and filing city.
  2. 02Match the English name spelling on the Thai original against the passport.
  3. 03Ask whether translation must be into Korean or English, and whether the original must be authenticated.
  4. 04If authentication is required, confirm the current process with Thai Consular Affairs and the Korean Embassy before submitting originals.

A translation is not authentication

A translation lets the recipient read the content. Legalization concerns the Thai official's signature or seal on the original. Neither guarantees acceptance; the Korean recipient decides.

Apostille status for Thai-issued documents

South Korea is a party to the Apostille Convention. The HCCH table records Thailand's accession on 30 June 2026, entering into force on 28 February 2027. Before that date do not order a Thai-issued Apostille; confirm the current authentication process with Thai Consular Affairs and the Korean Embassy.
