Thai documents / use in the United Kingdom
Thai documents for the UK: start with who will receive them
The Home Office, local register offices taking marriage notice, employers and universities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland ask for different evidence. Most cases start with a verifiable English translation; authenticating the original is needed only when the recipient says so.

Three common cases and what to ask
Home Office visa applications
Home Office document guidance asks for an English translation of documents in other languages, including the translator's confirmation of accuracy, the date, full name, signature and contact details. Read the guidance for your exact visa route.
Marriage or civil partnership notice
The local register office checks a foreign national's documents, such as birth certificates or evidence a previous marriage ended, and may ask for translations or more evidence. Call the office before preparing documents.
Study or employment
Universities and employers set their own rules. Some want transcripts with translations, some ask for a UK ENIC statement, and regulated professions may add requirements. Get the list in writing.
Checks before ordering translation or authentication
- 01Identify the recipient, UK nation and application or visa type.
- 02Match name spelling, date of birth and status on the Thai original against the passport.
- 03Ask what translation format is needed and whether the original must be authenticated.
- 04If authentication is required, ask Thai Consular Affairs about legalization and next steps before submitting originals.
A translator's confirmation is not authentication
The translator's confirmation covers the translation only. Legalization concerns the Thai official's signature or seal on the original. Neither guarantees acceptance; the recipient decides.
Apostille status for Thai-issued documents
The United Kingdom is a party to the Apostille Convention. The HCCH table records Thailand's accession on 30 June 2026, entering into force on 28 February 2027. On 1 October 2026 do not order a Thai-issued Apostille; confirm any authentication process with the recipient and Thai Consular Affairs.
