Because Thailand is not yet a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, cross-border use of Thai records still relies on the classic two-tier consular chain: the MFA authenticates the signature and seal of the original Thai issuer (District Office, Department of Provincial Administration, Royal Thai Police, Ministry of Education institution, or a Thai court), and the destination country's embassy in Bangkok then stamps the document again to accept it into its own legal system. Since 2025 the MFA has offered an e-Legalization portal with EMS return delivery, so overseas Thais and provincial applicants no longer need to visit the Chaeng Watthana counters in person. Practical delivery times remain sensitive to translation quality: an incorrect template, an outdated 6-month copy, or a translator who is not on the MFA registry is the number-one cause of a reject slip, which typically adds another 3–7 working days. Does Thailand accept Apostille yet?

Not yet. Cabinet has approved joining the Hague Apostille Convention in principle, but the deposit of the instrument and legislative alignment are still in progress. Until then, the two-tier consular chain remains mandatory.

Can I submit e-Legalization from abroad?

How long is a legalised document valid?
